What makes this accountant resume work
1. Numbers are specific and defensible
"Combined monthly revenue of about PKR 120M", "reduced reconciliation cycle from 4 working days to 2", "18 months of clean close by day 6" — each figure is concrete, bounded, and explainable. A reader knows exactly what the scope of the role was. Even the softer number ("about PKR 120M") is honest about its approximation.
2. The ERP migration bullet shows scope and risk
ERP migrations are high-stakes accounting projects. The bullet names the key activities — data validation, reconciliation of opening balances — that show the reader this wasn't a routine task. A weaker version of this bullet ("participated in ERP migration") would be indistinguishable from data entry.
3. Process improvement is included
The reconciliation template bullet is a good reminder that process improvement counts as an outcome. Accountants often describe their work as "prepared X" or "reviewed Y" — tasks — when what actually distinguishes them is the ways they made the process faster or more reliable. "Used by the wider finance team" is the credibility marker.
4. Audit experience is described with volume and variety
"15+ client engagements, ranging from small trading companies to listed-entity subsidiaries" gives a reader an immediate sense of the exposure. "Performed audit fieldwork" alone would not. Naming the specific technical areas (revenue recognition, inventory valuation, related-party disclosures) is appropriate — these are the areas audit managers screen for.
5. Part-qualified status is stated honestly
"ACCA — Part-qualified (Strategic Professional level, in progress)" is accurate and useful. It tells the reader where Usman is in his qualification without overclaiming. Removing the qualification entirely would sell him short; claiming to be fully qualified would be dishonest and easily checked.
6. Skills include both conceptual and tool knowledge
The skills section mixes "IFRS reporting" and "month-end close" (conceptual/technical) with "SAP S/4HANA" and "Excel (advanced)" (tools). Both are relevant for an accounting role. Including specific ERP names matters because finance teams want to know what systems a candidate has worked in — "ERP experience" is too vague.
Common accountant resume mistakes this example avoids
- Listing duties without outcomes. "Responsible for month-end close" describes the job, not what Usman did inside it. "Clean close by day 6 for the last 18 months" describes the outcome.
- Inflated titles. "Senior Accountant" at 5 years of experience is accurate. Claiming "Finance Manager" at that stage is a red flag to experienced readers.
- Omitting the audit side. Many accountants who move into industry drop their audit experience. It shouldn't be dropped — it's a distinct type of experience that many finance teams value.
- Over-detailing. Five bullet points per role would be too many here. The two-role structure with three to four bullets each is the right scope.
